The Kanamara Matsuri (“Festival of the Steel Phallus”) is a very popular celebration in Kawasaki, Japan. The first Sunday in April, the Kanayama Shrine welcomes thousands of visitors from Japan and from all over the world. There is also a competition to carve phallus on vegetables. The best ones are then sold at auction. The phallus remains the main attraction of the festival and it takes different forms of representation (candles, t-shirts, candies…).
